Hands-On Walkthrough of Apple Music and Beats 1 Radio

Apple's much-anticipated music service, Apple Music, launched this morning as part of iOS 8.4, bringing on-demand streaming music, the Beats 1 radio station, and Apple Connect, Apple's new social network aimed at letting artists connect with fans in new and unique ways.

We went hands-on with Apple Music in iOS 8.4 to give you a look at how the new service works, what it looks like, what it costs, and how to use it. Check out the video below to get a thorough overview of all three Apple Music components.

Apple Music's main streaming feature is a "For You" section within the Music app that offers up on-demand music recommendations based on preferences you've entered and music you've listed to previously. "For You" is able to offer more refined, tailored recommendations as you listen to more and more music.

AppleCare will replace your battery once it drops to 80% of its capacity

The battery in your iPhone or Apple Watch is a precious resource, and it becomes more precious as your devices age and their batteries begin to lose capacity. One solution to this problem is to buy an aftermarket replacement battery, look up an iFixit guide, and crack your phone or tablet open yourself. If you've paid for the AppleCare and AppleCare+ extended warranty programs, though, we've got good news.

Apple will now replace any battery covered by AppleCare+ once it drops below 80 percent of its original capacity, as outlined in refreshed AppleCare+ documents spotted by MacRumors late last week and reported on other sites today. Previously, a battery had to drop to 50 percent of its original capacity to be eligible for replacement under AppleCare+, limiting its helpfulness to all but the heaviest users and those with defective batteries. Macs covered by the standard AppleCare agreement can also have their batteries replaced if they drop below 80 percent of their original capacity, as outlined in a footnote here.

AppleCare+ can be added to an iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, or Apple Watch at purchase or within 60 days of the purchase date. AppleCare for Macs can be purchased at any point during the computer's standard one-year warranty term.

Jailbreakers: are you prepared for iOS 8.4?

iOS 8.4 Prepare Jailbreak

iOS 8.4 is scheduled to drop on Tuesday morning to usher in the Apple Music era. While this is extremely exciting for most iOS users, it should raise some eyebrows if you enjoy jailbreaking.

Although there have been rumblings and whispers about the fact that iOS 8.4 is susceptible to the same exploits that allowed TaiG to jailbreak iOS 8.3, until there is solid evidence, that’s all still speculation.

It’s possible that the release of iOS 8.4 could spell an early end to the fun we’ve been enjoying lately. So how does one prepare for iOS 8.4?... Read the rest of this post here

Uber Ruling Is A Harbinger Of The Need For Employment Law Change

uber1099 The recent ruling by a hearing officer with the California Labor Commission in a case involving an Uber driver is bad public policy. The issue this ruling addresses — whether the driver should be classified as an “employee” or “contractor” — is of crucial importance to Uber and all the on-demand companies that use a similar business model. Sonos teaser 001

Apple Music is a really great service until you realize that Spotify, the world leader in music streaming, works across a bunch of mobile and desktop platforms and is supported by dozens of Hi-Fi equipment, wireless speakers, gaming consoles, connected TV sets and more.

But Apple does not intend to ignore this aspect of Spotify. In what could only be described as a hint of broader third-party support in the works, both Sonos and Apple have now officially confirmed working together to bring Apple Music to Sonos hardware by the end of the year.... SpaceX’s Failed CRS-7 Mission Had Something To Do With An “Overpressure Event”

14391672592_63a4983d72_k It’s not entirely clear what happened during the launch of SpaceX‘s Commercial Resupply Services 7 (CRS-7) mission Sunday morning. A SpaceX cargo ship set out to deliver samples and supplies to the astronauts onboard the International Space Station for its seventh resupply mission this morning. Sadly, that rocket and all supplies exploded mid-air, shortly after blast-off at 10:22… Read More

10 Things That Can Derail A Round Of Funding

brokenmoney We read a lot about the seemingly 50-plus eight-figure venture rounds happening every day. All those great stories; this Razor-a-Day company raising at $600 million, that Valets-for-Pets company raising at $400 million. And we see a lot of advice on how to put together a good deck, do a good pitch, etc. What I’ve rarely seen is founder advice on why deals fall apart post-term sheet. Read More

Tweaks of the week: everything’s free!

Cydia restart springboard

What a week that was! Not so much in terms of jailbreak tweaks, but rather by the surprise release of the TaiG jailbreak, which pretty much came out of nowhere, although we knew progress was made on the iOS 8.3 jailbreak.

We’ve covered TaiG extensively with many tutorials to use the tool on Windows and Mac, so make sure to check these out if you’re looking into jailbreaking your iPhone or iPad.

As far as tweak releases go, this week was pretty meager, but all of them are free, so go at it.... Read the rest of this post here

Approaching Policy After Uber’s Scorched Earth

taxi uber strike paris The blowback to Uber reached a new level of intensity this week with massive and occasionally violent street protests in France. Our very own Romain Dillet walked around Paris snapping photos of the protests, which included overturned cars, smashed windows, and tires set on fire. Even for a nation with a storied past of truculent protest politics, the anti-Uber mobs were notable. It should come… Read More
