These Bionic Plants Can Detect Deadly Land Mines

Popeye was right when it came to the health benefits of spinach, but that simple sailor man couldn't have predicted this unorthodox use of the superfood. Researchers at MIT have found a way to use spinach to detect explosive materials in soil, potentially making the plant a safe way to detect landmines.

Classic Mac Startup Chime Not Present in New MacBook Pros

Apple has done away with the traditional startup chime on its new MacBook Pro lineup because the machines automatically power on when the lid is opened.

Pingie.com was first to note the removal of the sound from Apple's new 13-inch and 15-inch laptops – both the models featuring Apple's new Touch Bar (as well as the 13-inch version without a Bar) automatically boot when opened or when connected to a power source if the battery is dead, so the sound has apparently been deemed surplus to requirements.

The iconic chiming startup sound was originally made to indicate that diagnostic tests have found no hardware or software issues. A similar sound has accompanied almost every Mac boot sequence since 1991 and its most recent F-sharp chord incarnation was first used in the iMac G3.

A C major chord was originally recorded by Apple engineer Jim Reekes using a Korg keyboard, and what most people hear these days is a pitch-shifted version of the sound made by the Macintosh Quadra family of professional computers, first released in 1991.

According to the book The Sonic Boom: How Sound Transforms the Way We Think, Feel, and Buy, Reekes' "earconic" sound came out of a desire to replace the older tritone boot sound heard on earlier Macs. Reekes wanted to use a more meditative sound to indicate the Mac had passed its initial Power On Self Test (POST) checks, a sound he later called a "palate cleanser for the ears".

According to Reekes, Apple executives didn't particularly like the sound, but it managed to make the final code that was shipped in all Quadra 700 Macs. Allegedly, Steve Jobs himself prevented any further alteration of the sound when he came back to Apple in 1996.

The Mac startup sound can also be heard in 2008 Disney-Pixar movie WALL*E. When the titular robot character has reached 100 percent power after positioning his solar array, the booting chime goes off.

Apple has updated its support documents to reflect the change. As noted previously, Apple has also removed the backlit Apple logo on new MacBook Pro models.

Sharp exec confirms iPhone 8 will have curved OLED screen & all-glass design

iPhone 7 Plus Piano Black AppleArab concept 004

Sharp President Tai Jeng-wu-who is also a high-profile executive at Foxconn, Sharp's parent company and Apple's favorite contract manufacturer-said publicly that Apple's next iPhone will use a curved screen based on organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology akin to that on Samsung's Galaxy S7 smartphone, Nikkei reported Saturday.

As you know, Apple currently uses OLED screens on the Apple Watch and the new MacBook Pro's Touch Bar. All iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices to date have used traditional LCD screens.... Read the rest of this post here

Three reasons carriers are building new cell networks for the Internet of Things

iot internet of things city Wireless carriers are building all-new cellular networks for the Internet of Things. Cell phone networks fall short for IoT in three ways: battery life, cost and wireless coverage. Solving just one of those factors would be enough to justify new networks. Solving all three is a game-changer for IoT. Read More

15 hours with the 13” MacBook Pro, and how Apple's T1 bridges ARM and Intel

Andrew Cunningham

Here's the good thing: I walked away from Apple's campus yesterday with a new 13-inch MacBook Pro.

Here's the less good thing: it's not the one with the Touch Bar, the version that Apple actually spent most of its time talking about yesterday. It's the $1,499 version, the one with the same design, keyboard, trackpad, and screen as the Touch Bar version but with fewer Thunderbolt ports and, again, no Touch Bar. So the version of this laptop I've spent the most time with is, for better or worse, the version that most people won't be as interested in.

Ive and Newson's creation will be unveiled on November 18, and follows similar commemorative trees designed by Christopher Bailey for Burberry, Dolce & Gabbana, and Kelly Ellis of McQueens, amongst others.

Ive has collaborated with close friend Newson on a number of one-of-a-kind projects in recent years, with many of the creations being sold off at auction and raising millions of dollars for charity in the process. Previous products have included a red Mac Pro, an aluminum desk, and a special edition Leica camera.

In 2014, it was revealed Newson had been officially hired part-time by Apple to work with Ive's in-house design team. Newson is also rumored to have worked on previous Apple products before officially joining the company.

Apple's New 'TV Guide for Streaming' Won't Include Netflix: Report

When iPhone 7 Home button fails, iOS 10 offers a nice software workaround

iOS 10 software Home button teaser

MacRumors forum member “iwayne” has noticed that iOS 10 offers an interesting software workaround for when the iPhone 7's non-moving Home button fails.

Should that ever happen to you, iOS 10 will instantly create a software-based Home button centered at the bottom of the screen.

Not unlike the AssistiveTouch accessibility feature that many iPhone owners in Asia use regularly over fear of breaking the physical Home button, iOS 10's new onscreen button could hint at how a bezel-less iPhone 8 might work without a physical Home button.... Read the rest of this post here

It's time for laptop companies to switch to Precision Touchpad

A new build of Windows 10, version 14946, was released to insiders today. In common with the other builds we've seen since the release of the Anniversary Update, the new build doesn't offer a whole lot of new functionality-we're not expecting to see a ton of new features until Microsoft's Windows 10 event later this month-but it does make a few small changes. One of these is a new interface for configuring touchpad gestures, pictured above.

This comes after the previous build made updates to touchpad handling to improve the detection of two-finger gestures and clicking. The Windows 10 Anniversary Update also made changes in this area, adding new four-finger gestures.

These changes are good to see. One of Apple's traditional strengths with its computers has been its touchpads. Not only does Apple have accurate algorithms with accurate detection of clicks and gestures, it also has rich and configurable gestures built in to, and updated with, the operating system. With Windows 10, Microsoft is able to match this capability.
